DA CAPO

PROGRAM: Concert Hall

ABOUT: Once designed to be a central meeting point for the community, The Chiesa Diruta resuscitates as Da Capo, a harmonious multi-purposeful gathering space for local residents and tourists. Da Capo respects and complements the history of the original structure by infusing contemporary triangular tensile structures, along with golden brass detailing, connecting the old and new with very minimal aggression to the site and the ruin itself.

As a multidisciplinary team - consisting of architectural, sound, and user experience designers - we are aiming to create a multi-functional social space for the city of Grottole: one that holds values of inclusiveness, respect, and connectivity. Both grand entrances allow free and public circulation to locals as well as tourists, and the flexible spaces within the building allow a variety of events to be hosted, even when the spaces aren’t fully in use.

Da Capo comprises of three main spaces:

Main Stage - The centre of the structure hosting performances, lectures and film screenings. While the seating and the stage are fixed, the space can be further enlarged to the minor stage. This allows the space to become suitable for other types of events such as fashion catwalks or monthly local food bazaars.

Minor Stage - A flexible space overlooking the valley with the ability to host an exhibition gallery, local markets, community groups, and many other public events. The glass structure allows for an open air feel, providing a connection with the natural beauty of the area and the ancient structure of the church.

Rooftop - A communal space for locals and tourists to meet and relax while enjoying the framing of the views that encompass the church. Recreational activities such as the swing, chess boards and casual bar encourage further social interaction and fosters more empathy  between both parties.

Along with its three main spaces and additional spaces, Da Capo hopes to create a new chapter for Grottole. Chiesa Diruta will no longer be remembered, rather experienced, together and freely.
