PROGRAM: Center for Architecture and Urban Design Los Angeles
ABOUT: The proposed form is the result of various geometrical mutations. In the first phase, the programs were segmented into the following categories: education, commercial, restrooms, lobby, and office space. These spaces were then enveloped by a loose skin that kept transforming as the spaces became further separated and the circulation more defined. The skin eventually ruptured into two main entities: the gallery and the office. The decision to create two access points allowed workers to arrive to their meetings earlier and visitors to wander in the museum space without disrupting the employees. The roof, exterior paving, and landscaping mutated from the building’s form as the skin matured and multiplied.
The project was further developed in section and interior partition systems. Ceiling heights were based on the room’s programmatic purpose, with more important spaces - such as the gallery or the lecture hall - becoming top priority. In the interior, columns melted from the ceiling to the floor, dictated the circulation through the building, and allowed the visitors to openly walk from room to room.
