TEUTHIDA

DATE: Spring 2016

PROGRAM: Phone Booth

ABOUT: Teuthida mimics corporeal coding signals preys use to protect themselves from predators in the wild. The team replicated this feature by creating a semi-living project, which invites and protects users at the same time. The silicone units stretch out and command attention, while the inside is kept a mystery.

To enter, the visitor must crawl into the small openings. The silicone members in the interior double as pockets for personal items, and the fur responds to the shape of the visitor. Both materials aid in the soundproofing of the object and make it an ideal place to make a phone call.

When rotated onto its flattened backside, the oculus becomes the new entrance. The seat transforms into a backrest for a more comfortable resting position, and the foam elements on the rear ends help cushion the plastic from the ground.

Teuthida is featured on Archinect.com, in the article, “The Somnolent Experimentations of Architecture School.”
